Every day that passes we trust more in our mobile devices. In them we keep photos, passwords and all kinds of important information, so long ago that there is two-step verification, a system which, in addition to the password, send us a security code to a trusted device that we will need to enter to gain access to our account.
Currently, a time introduced the password, provided have the verification in two steps enabled, the system us ask where want to receive the code, if in a device of confidence or via SMS, but the option of the SMS could have them days numbered. And it is that the National Institute of standards and technology (NIST) of the United States has published information from a document that does not recommend the use of SMS as a verification of this type.
SMS and check in two steps: a story that is coming to its end
According to the study, the problem is that users we can use virtual phone numbers instead of actual thus weakening the security of the process. Currently, NIST says it is still safe to use two-step verification and the SMS provided the phone number that has been sent is real, but it seems that in the future does not recommend its use whatever the number to which the message is sent.
NIST is not an Institute that dictate laws and decided to follow or not its recommendations must take the companies, but does tend to ignore what it says. It is likely that SMS stop to be offered as an option to access some services from Apple and other companies, so that in the case of the company directed by Tim Cook is they will have to create applications that can be used by users of Windows, Android, Linux or any other operating system that may not receive notifications of Apple.
