Last Wednesday’s perhaps has been the most brilliant presentation by Microsoft in years. A demonstration that they are capable of creating more and better products. Between it presented, the new Surface Book, a PC with screen touch convertible in tablet to the separate the screen from the body. On the other side of the coin we have the Apple event, held two days later and where also saw touch screens in the new MacBook, but with a completely different approach.
Instead of giving us 13 or 15 inch – according to the model-touchscreen, what they have done is to create a panel that replaces the last row of keys and that will vary depending on the application or program that we are. Beyond the novelty that this may seem, the Touch Bar is not only one additive, but a declaration of intentions: ever see a MacBook in which its home screen is touch.
Why?
What certain is that the response is more easy of what could appear. To know we have to go back until time of Jobs, when everything was happiness and days in Cupertino smelled a mixture of Unicorn horsehair and cotton candy. Jokes aside, who was CEO of Apple left us, among many other things, a reflection on why Macs should not incorporate a touchscreen. Was in 2010, during the presentation of the MacBook Air, where US explained that the surfaces vertical not are made to be touch, since the arm is just tired if it have raised during a long period of time.
To this must be added that macOS is a desktop operating system, so it is not intended to be tactile. Interaction should be on the keyboard, exactly where is located the Touch Bar. Thanks to she can count with new functions without need of having that extend our arm towards the screen, adding versatility to the main element of interaction with our computer: the keyboard.
Touch Bar is the solution proposed by Apple before the touch dilemma in which manufacturers are. And perhaps the most ingenious we’ve seen so far.
