First bluetooth mobile devices allow us to share contacts in the phonebook, photographs and videos with other devices regardless of the manufacturer of the device, but after the arrival of smartphones, it began to open a gap separating on the one hand Apple devices with integrated Android devices. Through the jailbreak we could find some tweaks that allow us to share from the iPhone to other devices our images and videos without having to resort to send them by email or by any other means.
But the arrival of smartphones also brought us a new way of making use of bluetooth, providing it with a greater radius of action, lower power consumption and more features such as the use of positioning beacons, which we send information based on our location, but also allows us to control household devices, drones, toys… the possibilities now are almost endless.
But within a few days, the regulatory body of this technology, Bluetooth SIG, responsible for the development of this technology announced the main new features that come with this fifth version of bluetooth communications standard. What we do know is that this fifth version will be much faster, will have greater coverage, and will allow us to perform additional functions which until now we couldn’t because of the limitations imposed by us.
One of the main use that target this fifth version is intended to improve communication with devices that connect using this technology, such as the case of IoT devices, but are also destined to the location beacons, popularly called by Apple iBeacon, to target advertising to users also offer information about services and products as we come to them , something that has become very commonplace in the United States.
The transmission speed of the current version of bluetooth is currently 24 Mbps and has a limited range of action of about 10 meters. But this fifth version promises to give us a speed up to 100 Mbps and extend the range up to at least 50 meters.
